Maverick

A Boy, His Crew, and a Dog

MAVERICK was born from both the classroom and the heart.

As a college professor, I often heard young adults say they had lost their passion for reading or really never discovered it. Curious and concerned, I began paying attention to when that shift seemed to happen. What I discovered was eye-opening: for many students, the joy of reading fades around middle school, when books start to feel more like assignments than adventures.

That realization planted a seed.

I set out to create a story that would bring the focus back to the joy of reading — the laughter, the connection, the feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself.

I hope this story about a beach town, loyal friends, discoveries, and one unforgettable dog finds you right when you need it — and reminds you that adventure is always just one page away.

Hear from our readers:

  • Eleven-year-old Maverick finally moves into his forever home with his mom and his military dad… but one important piece is missing — a dog to call his own. As he begins this new chapter, he carries a quiet ache for something to complete his picture of “home.” This story gently explores belonging, hope, and the deep bond between a child and the dream of a loyal companion. Maverick’s journey is heartfelt and relatable, filled with warm, sincere moments that remind us that patience, love, and faith often bring unexpected gifts. The Beach Angel — and those unforgettable ocean sandwiches — will stay with me. Though written for middle-grade readers, adults will absolutely love this tender, hopeful story. Sometimes the smallest missing piece can lead to the happiest ending. - Toni

  • I thought it was a fun, funny book to read.

It was really inspiring to me, and it was very relatable because I have changed schools like Maverick.

I really love the book and all the characters. I love Ocean Sandwiches now!

  • Maverick is an exploration of some of life’s more meaningful connections – family, friends, and ultimately the devotion of a boy to his dog.

Framing change as an opportunity for growth, this story examines the arc of newly formed relationships as they evolve naturally into trusting friendships. Compelling themes about adapting to new circumstances and surroundings, the importance of responsibility, the consequences of choices and the “dogged” determination of the protagonist are woven throughout and make this book enjoyably rewarding to read – no matter your age.

Overall, Maverick is a moving reflection on what it means to care deeply for those we love and for the pets that – unsurprisingly – become part of our lives… and our hearts.

  • Maverick is a heartwarming story that has been such a treat to share with the 7-year-old boy I tutor. At the end of each session, we read together, and he has really connected with the story because he dreams of having a dog someday, something he talks about often.

Watching him relate to the characters and get excited about the story has made reading it even more special.

  • Maverick is wonderful! From the incredible descriptions of iconic Ventura landmarks, to the nuanced relationships between Maverick and his crew, especially Finn, this story is both insightful and familiar in the best possible ways. Sully and Murphy, the golden duo, stole my heart and confirmed that dogs really do bring out the best in all of us. I'm eager to share Maverick with all the readers in my life, regardless of age. And will also be leveraging the adventures of this engaging and fun "crew" to entice young people I know to read this heartwarming tale, too.  Hoping this is the first in a series of Maverick and Murphy adventures! -Kris

  • What I liked most about the book was how creative it was. And although they weren’t real people, those things could happen.

It had a good sense of creativity. I related to the book because I have a dog myself. It was just a fun read.

  • I thought the book was amazing.

It had things that would actually happen in Ventura.

You can actually get taken away by a sneak wave, or we can actually have a big storm like the one in the book, and find a dog.

A lot of people can connect to it. I recommend the book.

    Alison, age 11

  • Easy to read.

I liked the art because it was similar to what I had pictured in my head.

    Vivianne, age 11.

  • The book was great.

It described the life of someone our age.

I connected with the boy because we both want a dog.
